Finding your purpose in your birth chart
Where the ruler of your 10th house sits
The short version
No chart hands you a job title, but astrologers do have a method for reading direction and purpose. Find the sign on your 10th house, find the planet that rules that sign, then see which house that planet sits in. That house shows the kind of work and contribution that feels most like yours. It is the same method the Houses app uses for its purpose reading.
Why the 10th house
The 10th house, Calling, sits at the very top of the chart and starts at the Midheaven, the point that was highest overhead when you were born. It covers career, reputation and what you want to be known for. The sign on it describes your style at work. The planet that rules that sign is the one that carries your 10th house story out into the rest of your chart.
Step 1: the sign on your 10th
Look at the sign your 10th house begins in. You need your birth time for this, because the Midheaven moves through all twelve signs in a day. Put your date, time and place into the calculator on the home page and it shows the sign on each house.
Step 2: the ruling planet
Every sign has a ruling planet. These are the rulers the Houses app uses. Some astrologers use older, traditional rulers for three signs: Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius and Jupiter for Pisces. If yours is one of those, it is worth reading both.
- Aries · ruled by Mars
- Taurus · ruled by Venus
- Gemini · ruled by Mercury
- Cancer · ruled by the Moon
- Leo · ruled by the Sun
- Virgo · ruled by Mercury
- Libra · ruled by Venus
- Scorpio · ruled by Pluto
- Sagittarius · ruled by Jupiter
- Capricorn · ruled by Saturn
- Aquarius · ruled by Uranus
- Pisces · ruled by Neptune
Step 3: the house that planet is in
Find the ruling planet in your chart and note its house. That house is where your sense of calling gets lived out day to day. Here is what each one suggests, in the same words the app uses.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 1st · Self Identity, body, how you come acrossYour career is driven by you: your name, your style and your initiative. You work best when you lead or run something that carries your stamp, and being told what to do all day wears you down.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 2nd · Worth Money, values, securityYour direction runs through building real value, whether income, craft or something you can hold. You tend to do well where your effort turns into something tangible, and you want pay that matches what you are worth.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 3rd · Voice Communication, siblings, learning, neighbourhoodYour direction comes through words, ideas and information: writing, teaching, selling, connecting. You do well in jobs with variety and plenty of talk, and you pick things up faster than you give yourself credit for.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 4th · Roots Home, family, private lifeYour direction is tied to home, family or place, so working from where you live, or caring for the places and people around you, suits you. Many of your best ideas arrive in familiar spaces.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 5th · Desire Romance, creativity, pleasure, childrenYour direction leans creative, with work that lets you perform, make, play or inspire. You are at your best when your job has an element of joy, and children, art or entertainment may feature.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 6th · Ritual Work, routines, health, habitsYour direction comes through daily work and being useful: practical, skilled, detail-minded jobs and care for others. You thrive when you can improve a process, solve a real problem or help someone in a hands-on way.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 7th · Bonds Relationships, partners, marriageYour direction opens through partnership, with colleagues, clients or a business partner. You do well in roles that involve negotiation, advice, design or fairness, and you work better in a pair than alone.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 8th · Shadow Intimacy, transformation, shared moneyYour direction goes towards depth: research, finance, therapy, healing, investigation or anything involving what others avoid. You thrive where the work matters emotionally and you are trusted with sensitive things.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 9th · Distance Travel, beliefs, higher learningYour direction heads outward, through teaching, publishing, travel, law or anything that widens people's horizons. You need a job with meaning and room to grow, and a desk with no view tends to flatten you.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 10th · Calling Career, public image, ambitionYour direction is bound up with public achievement, so you aim for a role of real responsibility and visibility. You tend to rise by being consistent, and you feel at home when the work carries your name.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 11th · Circle Friends, community, future goalsYour direction comes through groups, networks and shared goals: teams, communities, technology, causes. You work best with a crowd and a mission, and your future often turns on who you know.
- Ruler of the 10th in the 12th · Depth Dreams, hidden patterns, solitudeYour direction is quiet, behind the scenes, in healing, art, research, care or work that suits a rich inner life. You do well when you have space to work alone, and your best contributions are often unseen but felt.
A worked example
Say your 10th house begins in Sagittarius. Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter. If your Jupiter is in your 6th house, Ritual, your direction comes through daily work and being useful: practical, skilled work and caring for others in a hands-on way. If Jupiter is also in a caring sign like Cancer, that care-giving theme gets even stronger.
If the ruler is in the 10th itself
If the ruling planet sits in your 10th house, the story stays at the top of the chart. Career and public life are likely to be a big theme for you, and you may feel most yourself when your work carries your name.
Other clues to look at
Your busiest house, the one with the most planets, shows where much of your life happens, and the app combines it with your 10th house ruler to write your purpose line. The house your Sun is in shows where you feel most yourself. Some astrologers also look at the North Node, a point rather than a planet, as the direction you grow towards over a lifetime.
Keep it in proportion
Your chart describes tendencies, not instructions. Plenty of people find their purpose somewhere their chart would not have predicted. Use it as a prompt for questions: what kind of work makes you lose track of time, and does that match what your 10th house ruler says?
